Weekly vacation lodging on Pleasant Street, in the heart of Camden |
The Camden Carriage House is perfectly located 800 feet from downtown Camden and its harbor, schooners,
windjammers, parks, dozens of restaurants, pubs and scores of unique
shops. Your accomodations are quietly removed from the noise and congestion
of the shopping area, and US Route One, by a single tree-shaded block.
This two story, two bedroom, attached carriage house includes a listing
on the national historic register and a recent and total renovation that features
new fixtures, systems and surfaces. |
Prior to 1800, William Parkman, a ship joiner by trade, moved to Camden and and began
building a fine home on Pleasant Street for himself, his wife Sarah and their
5 daughters. When he finished his home, Mr. Parkman pressed on to build an attached
carriage house. Now, more than two centuries later, this classic
Federal style residence is listed on the National Register of Historic Places due,
in part, to Mr. Parkman's skill in joinery and his later success in real estate
development in Camden as a agent for the "Twenty Associates", an early investment
group. The carriage house has served well over the years in a wide
variety of capacities including a renown doctor's office and, of course, a place
to park the carriages. Mr. Parkman's daughters, Mary, Sarah, Lydia, Eliza
and Frances apparently liked to play in the attic of the carriage house and
enjoyed dropping their shoes (and everything else under the sun, including
lead grapeshot, ledgers and lots of handstiched leather balls) down into
the wall cavities where we found them over 200 years later while renovating
and insulating the walls. These renovations were truly like an archeological
dig. |
Your front door opens to your living and dining area that includes a cable TV and DVD
player. The dining area then leads to the well equipped full kitchen
that includes granite countertops, a dishwasher and microwave. The stairs
lead up to the two bedrooms on the second floor and the bathroom. There
is a queen sized Select Comfort bed in the yellow southern bedroom and two twin beds in the northern bedroom.
During renovations, an additional acoustic barrier wall was installed between
the main house and the carriage house to help insure your comfort and privacy.
